i am writing to tell you about the discussion we’ve had about the relationship between economic development and environment protection.
some students believe we should never sacrifice environment for economy. they think the present environmental problems are largely caused by rapid economic development. for example, farmable land is decreasing because of the industrial development and the development of cities.
however, other students think it unnecessary to consider environmental problems now and economic development comes first. they believe that environmental problems are only the by-products of economic development, which are unavoidable. they can be dealt with later when we have the time and money.
i think the second view is completely wrong. the purpose of economic development is to provide a comfortable and happy life for our people. we should aim at sustainable development and a balance between the two.
